Julie Andrews is best known as Academy award-winning actor, Dame, singer, superstar, writer, but is also producer, mom and grandmother. On February 22nd, 2005, Dame Julie received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 42nd annual Publicists Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Born in England, she is a true jewel of that isle, bestowed with the regal title of Dame, though I personally think she does more for that title than it does for her. Julie became Broadway's fairest lady when she conquered New York at the tender age of 19, playing Eliza Doolittle in the Alan J. Lerner play, My Fair Lady. (Sadly, the only record we have of those awesome performances are the soundtrack albums.) From that stellar performance, Julie went on to become America's favorite nanny in Mary Poppins long before Fran Drescher could even dream of chatting up a CBS exec on a transatlantic flight! Julie won an Oscar for her role in that classic beloved film. (Vote for MP at the Disney Site!)
Her most famous role it appears though would be her next foray in "child-care" as a slightly unconventional governess in another movie-musical "The Sound of Music". TSOM has been called one of the greatest musicals of all time. There are not many who would dispute that fact. The movie was perfect in many ways but moreso because Julie won the hearts of audiences worldwide with her beautiful voice and graceful charm. The plot of TSOM may not have been perfect but there have been none to surpass it. Julie would probably like to forget TSOM for a bit though because it was not the "be all and end all" of her career (thankfully for the fans!), although many people seem to focus on it when thinking of her. It must be that singing-on-the-mountain opening scene. The world can never forget Maria. However much "Maria" is admired, one can never forget Julie won her an Oscar for her very first film role as Mary Poppins, a thoroughly entertaining film (Read my Imdb review) that I love to watch so much it has me wondering which is really my favorite Julie movie. Apart from these two films, I think one of her most striking and noteworthy accomplishments is her starring role as Cinderella in a live TV broadcast performance of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical on March 31, 1957. The show gained the highest rating, setting a record for that time, and was watched by over 107 million people. There were TV series, including the eight-Emmy award winning show "The Julie Andrews Hour" and many more movies, the most famous post-TSOM would be Victor/Victoria which played both on the silver screen and on Broadway. That in itself is a tribute to the awesome megastar. There are not many who can claim to have conquered both and Julie Andrews has, in spite of being passed over for the film version of My Fair Lady. More recently, Julie Andrews reprised her role in the delightful sequel of the original comedy, The Princess Diaries (where she sings just a little bit!) and hosted the PBS series, Broadway the American Musical (Archived news).
Her role as the nanny in "Eloise at Christmastime," garnered her an Emmy nomination.
Julie has also lent her voice to the box office smash Shrek 2 (#1 animated flick!),
and the new Mary Poppins 40th Anniversary DVD which features (among other things), a commentary by Miss Poppins herself.
Julie will soon return to TV according to word from Sesame Workshop regarding a new series The Little Carousel.
Despite a very hectic schedule, Julie still finds time to help with vocal chords research--so much for taking time off to work on regaining her full singing voice!
I still wish the best of luck to Julie on regaining her voice! God be with you!
Here's something fun to do:
